About The Band: Billy Needs A Beard

Our Story

Billy Needs a Beard began much like the best bands do — almost by accident. In January 2002, Ben was supposed to meet Steve to start learning guitar. At first, Ben wasn’t sure Steve was serious, but after a phone call from Steve, he realized it was real and attended the second Monday in January. They played together for the first time, learning songs like Julia and the opening riff that would become part of their early sets. By March 2002, Bill had joined to hone his guitar skills alongside Steve and Ben. The group welcomed Jimmy in January 2003, rounding out the lineup and preparing for their first public performance later that year at Munn Park’s Fall Fest in October 2003, with Steve as the experienced musician guiding the others.

Those early sessions became the band’s heartbeat: same night, same room, same circle of friends creating something relaxed, honest, and fun. Each member brought a different musical background, shaping the group’s acoustic, folk-leaning sound while drawing subtly from blues, classic rock, and singer-songwriter traditions. They didn’t over-arrange or over-rehearse; instead, they played with the instincts and chemistry that come from learning and growing together.

Over the years, Billy Needs a Beard has established a strong presence in the central Florida live-music scene, performing at a variety of local venues and festivals and connecting with loyal fans across the region. While membership has evolved, the spirit of the band — camaraderie, live energy, and a love of songwriting and performance — has remained consistent.

On the recording side, the band’s self-titled debut album, Billy Needs A Beard, was released in 2007, followed by Slightly West of Center in 2011, showcasing growth in songwriting and studio production. Their latest album has just finished production and will be released very soon, marking an exciting new chapter. Available now on most music-streaming platforms, Billy Needs A Beard continues to mix heartfelt songwriting, live-band energy, and a genuine love of performance.

Through it all, the band has always been about connection: between the players, the music, and the audience. What began as casual weekly jams grew into something bigger — a band with its own voice, its own history, and plenty of stories that still make everyone smile.

Steven Glick

From the earliest Monday-night sessions, Steve was the musician everyone relied on—the steady hand guiding a group that was still learning how to play together. His technical skill, natural feel for arrangement, and calm, grounded presence shaped the band’s earliest sound and set the tone for everything that came after. He became the anchor that kept the group balanced as the lineup grew, the music evolved, and the band stepped onto bigger stages.

There’s a whole story behind how Steve helped build the foundation the band still stands on today. Discover more in his full writeup →

Ben Graffam — A Chapter in Our Story

Ben Graffam helped shape Billy Needs a Beard from the very beginning as the group's Monday-night jams morphed into a band with its own voice. From imperfect harmonies to original songs, he loved the creative ride. After stepping away, he channeled that same curiosity into writing, resulting in his book, Reimagining the Educated Mind, which helps students discover their own learning process and artistic voice.

Jimmy Basham

Jimmy Bassham holds a cherished place in the history of Billy Needs a Beard. As both a musician and a creative force, he brought a spirit of imagination, generosity, and steady artistry that helped shape the band’s earliest years and its evolving sound. Jimmy shared his talents freely and became an important part of the group’s identity during the time he performed with them.

Outside the band, Jimmy lived a remarkable life of creativity and service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and went on to work in city government mapping as well as in artistic and prop-building roles at Disney. His blend of technical skill and artistic craft mirrored the balance he brought to the band—practical, inventive, and always contributing something meaningful.

Jimmy passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 77, and is survived by his wife Mary Bassham and a large circle of loved ones. His impact, both within the band and in the wider world around him, continues to be deeply felt. A full tribute honoring Jimmy’s life, musical journey, and legacy with the band is currently being developed. We look forward to sharing his story in greater detail after speaking with Mary and gathering the memories that best represent who he was and what he brought to Billy Needs a Beard.
